Another wonderful week has flown by in the Owls classroom! The children have been busy continuing their learning across the curriculum and have shown fantastic enthusiasm, creativity and determination. It has been brilliant to see them applying new skills, working together and becoming more confident in explaining their understanding.
In Art, we have begun our exciting new topic, “Painting and Mixed Media”. The children have been exploring the world of colour by investigating primary and secondary colours and discovering how colours can be mixed together to create new ones. They have enjoyed experimenting with different colour combinations and discussing what happens when colours are blended. The children have also explored how artists can make colours lighter or darker by making careful choices when mixing. Owls, can you tell a grown-up what the three primary colours are? How can you make a colour lighter or darker?
In Computing, we have continued our exciting journey with Scratch Junior. The children have been busy creating more jokes using code and have also started creating their own versions of the story “The Three Little Pigs”. So far, they have planned their ideas carefully and used their knowledge of algorithms to create a computer program. We will continue this next week and the children will be required to explain their code, choose the correct coding blocks and apply their previous learning about these functions. Owls, can you explain to a grown-up what an algorithm is? Can you remember what the different coloured blocks do in Scratch Junior?
In Maths, we have continued our topic on Position and Direction. The children have been developing their understanding of describing movements and turns, using the correct mathematical language to explain what is happening. They have enjoyed creating their own movement patterns and identifying different turns before completing an assessment to show everything they have learned. Owls, can you explain the difference between a quarter turn and a half turn? What words can we use to describe movement?
In English, we have reached the end of our exciting stimulus text, “The Way Back Home”. The children have worked incredibly hard throughout this unit and have now completed their Big Write. They worked with partners to create a shared write before planning, writing and editing their own instructions about how the boy and the Martian could escape a desert island on a boat. The children carefully applied their learning about instructions and worked hard to make their writing clear and exciting for the reader. Owls, can you tell a grown-up what makes a good set of instructions? Why is editing an important part of writing?
In Phonics, we have been exploring different homophones and learning that some words sound the same but have different meanings and spellings. The children have particularly enjoyed singing along to the “Homophone Song” to help remember these tricky words. We have also been learning the spelling rule of dropping the “e” when adding suffixes. Owls, can you explain what a homophone is? Can you think of two words that sound the same but have different meanings?
In Science, we have discovered the results of our cress investigation! The children explored which conditions were best for growing cress and used their observations to discuss what plants need to grow successfully. As part of our Humans and Animals topic, we have also been learning about hygiene and why it is important to keep ourselves clean. The children explored how germs spread and ways we can prevent this. We also discussed why exercise is important for humans and how it helps to keep our bodies healthy. Owls, can you tell a grown-up some ways we can stop germs spreading? Why is exercise important for our bodies?
The children have worked incredibly hard this week and should be very proud of their achievements. From experimenting with colours to creating computer programs, writing exciting instructions and investigating how to stay healthy, they have shown great curiosity and enthusiasm in their learning.
Keep spreading your wings, Owls, and continue to show us your wonderful curiosity and enthusiasm for learning! We are so proud of everything you are achieving and cannot wait to see what exciting adventures your learning brings next.
Have a lovely weekend!
