It’s been another busy week in the Owls classroom, filled with exciting learning opportunities, thoughtful discussions and lots of wonderful ideas being shared. Owls, we hope you are ready to tell your grown-ups all about what you have been learning this week!
In PSHE, we continued exploring our theme of “Being Safe.” We discussed the difference between surprises, secrecy and privacy, and thought carefully about how we can keep ourselves safe both in person and online. Can you explain to a grown-up what these words mean? Can you tell them why it is important to keep some information private?
In RE, we revisited the idea of “belonging.” Over the last two lessons, we have been learning about the Jewish community, discovering where Jewish people worship, the special clothing they may wear, important celebrations within their faith and symbols that are meaningful to them. We talked about how these shared traditions help people feel connected and part of a community. To finish our learning, we created our own hand templates to display everything we had discovered. Owls, can you share some facts about Judaism with someone at home? What did you find most interesting?
In Maths, we have continued our new topic on statistics. The children are becoming increasingly confident at interpreting information and creating tally charts, bar charts, block diagrams and pictograms. Owls, can you show a grown-up how to create one of these charts? Which type of chart do you think is the easiest to read? Why not try creating your own family pictogram or block diagram at home using a topic of your choice?
We began the week in English by completing our “Big Write.” The children worked incredibly hard to write their own sequels to our stimulus text, Spy Fox, and then carefully proofread and edited their work with great maturity — well done! Later in the week, we revisited adverbs, identifying them in sentences and using them to make our writing more detailed and interesting. Can you explain to someone at home what an adverb is? Can you spot any adverbs together while reading a story at home? You could even go on your own adverb treasure hunt!
In Phonics, we focused on the w-ar (or) grapheme. We practised adding the suffixes -ing and -ed to words, as well as changing them into plural forms. The children also enjoyed reading the story Swarm Warning, where they identified lots of w-ar words and completed related activities. Please continue supporting your child’s reading and vocabulary development at home, and do encourage regular practice on Spelling Shed.
In Science, the children completed their assessment on Living Things and then began their exciting new topic on Plants. We explored different types of plants and discussed which ones we can and cannot eat. Can you tell a grown-up about the plants you have learned about this week? Do you have a favourite plant or vegetable? Why not discuss with your family how you could include more plants in your diet — or perhaps even grow some in your garden?
Keep up the “hoot” work, Owls! We hope you have a wonderful weekend, and look forward to another fantastic week of learning next week.
Mrs A and Mrs T-D 😊
