Impact

Impact of Writing at Repton Primary School

The impact of our writing curriculum is evidenced through pupils who:

  • Enjoy writing and see themselves as writers.
  • Understand the purpose of their writing.
  • Communicate effectively for a range of audiences.
  • Write with increasing fluency and independence.
  • Apply spelling, punctuation and grammar accurately.
  • Demonstrate pride in presentation.
  • Use ambitious vocabulary appropriately.
  • Can discuss, explain and justify their writing choices.
  • Produce high-quality outcomes across the curriculum.
  • Leave Repton Primary School prepared for the next stage of their education.

Most importantly, pupils understand that writing is a powerful means of communication through which they can inform, entertain, persuade, discuss and influence the world around them.

Teachers monitor progress through ongoing assessment, pupil discussions, learning walks, work scrutiny and attainment outcomes.

Assessment

Assessment is an ongoing element of teaching and learning. We use assessment at the end of every unit of writing to assess if children have understood and utilised the components taught in the sequence of writing. Teachers use assessment to identify strengths, gaps in understanding and next steps for learning.

Assessment considers:

  • Purpose and audience
  • Composition
  • Vocabulary
  • Grammar and punctuation
  • Spelling
  • Handwriting and presentation
  • Independence

Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own writing and use feedback to improve future outcomes.

Assessment is used to support progress and inform teaching rather than simply judge attainment.
