Intent

Intent of Writing at Repton Primary School

At Repton Primary School, our intention is to develop pupils who:

  • Write confidently, accurately and fluently.
  • Understand the purpose of their writing and the needs of their audience.
  • Can communicate ideas effectively across a range of contexts.
  • Develop a genuine enjoyment of writing.
  • Possess the knowledge and skills required to write independently.
  • Take pride in the presentation of their work.
  • Build stamina and resilience as writers.
  • Leave primary school as confident communicators who can write successfully for a range of real-life purposes.

We aim to ensure that pupils understand writing as a meaningful act of communication rather than simply an academic exercise. Through carefully planned opportunities to inform, entertain, persuade and discuss, children learn that writing can influence, inspire and impact others.

Our curriculum enables children to gain the knowledge, experiences and vocabulary required to write effectively, whilst simultaneously developing the technical accuracy needed to communicate with clarity and confidence.

Alignment with the DfE Writing Framework (July 2025)

Our approach closely reflects the principles outlined within the DfE Writing Framework.

We recognise that:

  • Writing is a complex process that must be taught explicitly.
  • Composition and transcription are equally important aspects of writing.
  • Reading, talk and writing are closely interconnected.
  • Oral language underpins written communication.
  • Pupils benefit from high-quality modelling and guided practice.
  • Knowledge and skills should be carefully sequenced and revisited over time.
  • Purpose and audience should drive compositional decision-making.

Writing is therefore taught through carefully planned sequences that allow pupils to develop, rehearse and apply new learning before producing independent outcomes.
