WE RESPECT, WE TAKE PRIDE, WE SUCCEED

Inclusion and SEND

Inclusion and SEND

At Repton Primary School, we believe that every child is a writer. All pupils are entitled to access an ambitious writing curriculum regardless of need, starting point or barrier to learning.

Teachers carefully adapt teaching to ensure that all pupils can participate successfully in the writing process and experience success as writers.

Adaptive Teaching

Teachers may provide:

  • Additional modelling
  • Visual prompts
  • Vocabulary banks
  • Sentence stems
  • Worked examples
  • Structured planning frameworks
  • Scaffolded resources
  • Small-step learning sequences

Adaptations are responsive to individual need whilst maintaining high expectations for all learners.

Oracy Before Writing

Many pupils benefit from additional opportunities to orally rehearse and develop ideas before recording them.

Teachers provide opportunities for:

  • Partner talk
  • Small-group discussion
  • Sentence rehearsal
  • Language modelling
  • Vocabulary exploration

These approaches help children clarify ideas, develop language and build confidence before writing independently.

Scaffolding Independence

Support is carefully planned to enable pupils to become increasingly independent as writers.

Teachers seek to remove barriers to learning without reducing the level of challenge or ambition. Children are encouraged to take increasing ownership of the writing process whilst receiving appropriate support to achieve success.

Targeted Intervention

Where appropriate, pupils may receive additional support to develop:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Handwriting fluency
  • Phonics and spelling knowledge
  • Vocabulary development
  • Sentence construction
  • Oral language
  • Working memory
  • Writing stamina

Interventions are designed to complement, rather than replace, high-quality classroom teaching.

Assistive Technology and Alternative Approaches

Where appropriate, pupils may access reasonable adjustments, alternative recording methods or assistive technology to ensure that difficulties with transcription do not prevent them from demonstrating their understanding and ideas.

These approaches support pupils in accessing the curriculum whilst continuing to develop confidence and independence as writers.
